“Autistic Teenager Arrest in Leeds” has become a headline that’s stirring widespread controversy. Police have faced accusations of excessive force after arresting an autistic 16-year-old girl in Leeds, West Yorkshire, following her comment to an officer that she “looked like her lesbian nana”.
Driven home by police after midnight, the teenager, who also has scoliosis, made the comment which resulted in her subsequent arrest for a ‘homophobic public order offence’ in the early hours of the following Monday. The entire incident was captured by the girl’s mother and later uploaded to TikTok, amplifying the “Autistic Teenager Arrest in Leeds” outcry.
Captioning the video, the mother stated, “This is what police do when dealing with autistic children. My daughter told me the police officer looked like her nana, who is a lesbian.” She detailed how the officer interpreted the statement as homophobic, prompting the forceful response that the video documents.
