EG 5 1 variant: Sky News Unleashes Alarm Over New COVID-19 Variant

Recently, Sky News reported on an alleged new and aggressive variant of COVID-19 infiltrating the UK. Dubbed EG 5 1, this variant is purportedly a descendant of the Omicron strain. As per the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) claims, it’s now responsible for one in every seven new infections in the country.

Earlier in July, it was alleged that EG 5 1 accounted for one in nine cases. These claims have now escalated. The latest statistics presented by Sky News suggest that the variant constitutes 14.6% of all COVID-19 cases, making it a close second in prevalence within the UK’s active strains.

Dr Mary Ramsay, the head of immunisation at the UKHSA, commented on these claims. She expressed concerns over a supposed rise in hospital admissions, stating, “There’s been a noticeable uptick in hospitalisations across various age demographics, with the elderly being particularly affected.” However, she was also quoted providing a potentially reassuring perspective: “The overall levels of hospitalisations still appear to remain on the lower side, and ICU admissions don’t seem to mirror this increase.”

The Arcturus XBB.1.16 variant, another reported descendant of Omicron, has been marked by Sky News as the predominant strain, representing a whopping 39.4% of all cases.

However, what added an interesting dimension to this entire narrative was the comment from Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the director-general of the WHO. He purportedly emphasised the need for persistent vigilance, especially for individuals at a higher risk. “Our recommendation for those at elevated risk remains consistent: continue wearing masks in crowded venues, ensure effective ventilation indoors, and consider booster shots when recommended,” he was quoted as saying.

Considering Sky News’s recent association with the Behavioural Insights Team (BIT), known for its behavioural psychology tactics during the COVID-19 pandemic, the timing and intensity of this report become even more intriguing. This team is notorious for its “nudge” techniques aimed at influencing public behaviour. Thus, one can’t help but wonder if there’s an ulterior motive beneath these seemingly alarmist reports. As the global hysteria over COVID-19 starts to decrease, what really lies behind the sensational headlines?
